Os anos 60 ficaram marcados pelas independências africanas e por novas formas de pensar a história. Em Moçambique, em 1975, enquanto os políticos se engajavam na construção do Novo Estado Independente, os intelectuais voltaram-se para a oralidade como forma de edificar um saber descolonizado. A recolha de fontes orais foi implementada como arma epistémica para desmantelar o saber colonial e produzir uma nova versão da história contada pelo "Povo". Campanhas massivas de gravação foram lançadas pelo Arquivo Histórico de Moçambique (AHM), pelo Centro de Estudos Africanos (CEA) e pela Rádio Moçambique (RM). Hoje esse material está a ser recuperado e organizado por parceiros moçambicanos e o Arquivo Mayibuye da Universidade do Cabo Ocidental (UWC) na África do Sul. Neste debate, os oradores irão trazer à superfície não somente os passos já dados nesta colaboração inter-institucional, mas também os contornos históricos da constituição destes arquivos sonoros, e as vozes empoeiradas e enclausuradas em fitas magnéticas. Os oradores irão sugerir ainda pistas de investigação pautadas por uma perspectiva de "longa duração", onde se possa argumentar que o resgate técnico e epistémico destes arquivos do passado é crucial para o entendimento das razões históricas, antropológicas e sociológicas da insurgência em Cabo Delgado hoje.

The 1960s were marked by African independences and new ways of thinking the making history. In Mozambique, in 1975, while politicians were engaged in the construction of the new Independent state, intellectuals turned to orality as a way to build a decolonized knowledge. Collecting oral sources was implemented as an epistemic weapon to overthrow colonial knowledge and produce a new version of history told by the "People". Massive recording campaigns were launched by the Historical Archive of Mozambique (AHM), the Centre for African Studies (CEA) and Radio Mozambique (RM). Today that material is being recovered and organised, by Mozambican partners and the Mayibuye Archive of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in South Africa. In this debate, the speakers will bring to the surface not only the steps already taken in this inter-institutional collaboration, but also the historical contours of the constitution of these sound archives, and the dusty voices encased on magnetic tapes. The panelists will also suggest clues for research from a "long duration" perspective, where it can be argued that the technical and epistemic rescue of these archives from the past is crucial for the understanding of the historical, anthropological and sociological reasons behind the insurgency in Cabo Delgado today.

Carlos Fernandes é PhD em Estudos Africanos pela Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brasil. Foi pós-doutorado na Universidade do Cabo Ocidental, África do Sul (2012-2013), e na Universidade da Basileia, Suíça (2015). É Investigador Assistente do Centro de Estudos Africanos (CEA) da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM). Os seus interesses pesquisa centram-se na área da sociologia do conhecimento em África e história intelectual de Moçambique.

Carlos Fernandes holds a PhD in African Studies from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa (2012-2013), and at the University of Basel, Switzerland (2015). He is Assistant Researcher at the Centre for African Studies (CEA) of the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM). His research interests focus on the sociology of knowledge in Africa and intellectual history of Mozambique.

Paolo Israel nasceu em Roma, Itália. Estudou Filosofia na Universidade de Roma "La Sapienza", onde se graduou com uma dissertação sobre o estilo oral em narrativa tradicional italiana. Em 2001 inscreveu-se para estudos de doutoramento na Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Sciences Sociales de Paris, com foco na antropologia da arte e da performance. Desde 2002 tem realizado pesquisas no norte de Moçambique sobre temas ligados à dança, música, magia e história. O seu livro "In Step with the Times": Mapiko Masquerades of Mozambique (Atenas: Ohio University Press, 2014) traça a historicidade das mascaradas Makonde ao longo do século XX. Paolo está actualmente focado em dois projectos: um livro de literatura de não-ficção intitulado "The Magical Lions of Muidumbe", que explora o colapso do socialismo no coração da revolução moçambicana através da história da caça às bruxas; e uma micro-história do massacre de Mueda de 16 de Junho de 1960. No cerne dos seus interesses está a questão da escrita experimental.

Paolo Israel was born in Rome, Italy. He studied Philosophy at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", where he graduated with a dissertation on oral style in traditional Italian storytelling. In 2001 he enrolled for doctoral studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudies in Sciences Sociales of Paris, with a focus on the anthropology of art and performance. Since 2002 he has carried out research in northern Mozambique on themes connected with dance, music, magic and history. His book, In Step with the Times: Mapiko Masquerades of Mozambique (Athens: Ohio University Press, 2014) charts the historicity of Makonde masquerades throughout the twentieth century. Paolo is currently busy with two projects: a literary nonfiction book titled "The Magical Lions of Muidumbe", which explores the collapse of socialism in the heartland of the Mozambican revolution through the story of a witch-hunt; and a micro-history of the Mueda massacre of 16 June 1960. At the core of his interests is the question of experimental writing.

Simão Jaime é investigador, docente e chefe de Departamento de Investigação e Extensão do Arquivo Histórico de Moçambique. É licenciado em História pela Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, mestre e PhD pela Universidade Federal da Bahia - Brasil, em temas ligados a Estudos Étnicos e Africanos. Conferencista regular em seminários nacionais e internacionais, ele é autor de várias publicações onde estão reflectidas as suas investigações sobre aspectos culturais predominantes em Moçambique, nomeadamente a situação dos arquivos, usos da religião, o conhecimento indígena e, especialmente, a recolha e gestão da história oral em zonas de conflito ligadas ao período da Guerra Civil (1975-1992) e Guerra Colonial (1964-1975).

Simão Jaime is a researcher, lecturer and Head of Department of Research and Extension of the Historical Archive of Mozambique. He holds a degree in History from the Eduardo Mondlane University and a Master's and PhD from the Federal University of Bahia( Brazil), on themes linked to Ethnic and African Studies. He is a regular lecturer in national and international seminars; author of several publications where his researches on cultural aspects prevailing in Mozambique are reflected, namely the situation of archives, uses of religion, indigenous knowledge and, especially, the collection and management of oral history in conflict zones linked to the period of the Civil War (1975-1992) and Colonial War (1964-1975).
